In 1763 France adopted a new infantry musket, stronger than previous models to answer the need for accelerated fire tactics developed during the Seven Years War. This new gun was found to be too heavy and was replaced in 1766. More than 150,000 of the new Charleville models were produced by 1769. In 1775 France distributed large numbers of the 1766 models to the United States during the American Revolution.
