Inspired by the Charleville Model 1763, the 1795 was the first military gun ever produced by the Springfield Arsenal. The Secretary of War, Timothy Pickering, suggested the French musket since many of the parts were already available in Springfield's warehouse. In total about 85,000 guns were produced until 1814.
